A concept of a multifunctional building in the prominent Prague gap site
A concept of a multifunctional house in the clearly defined urban structure of Smíchov provides the alternative to the overwhelming arrangement of administrative buildings, which by repeating individual floors achieve a seeming efficiency but do not take into account the changeable demands for the contact with the outside world.
The design was developed by dividing and taking away mass. At first the mass filled the available space to the maximum. Then it was divided to individual floors. Individual functions were then
placed on floors according to their relation to the public space and according to the requirements for light-technical parameters. The traffic service is provided in the underground section, the commercial surfaces with the minimum demands for natural lighting are linked to the metro vestibule and the street level. The office areas constitute the main part and the last floor is designed for residential areas where the demands for light-technical solution and acoustic protection are the highest. The mass structured in this way is perforated by atriums whose
shape and slope uses to the maximum the natural light and insolation. The atriums conduct light and air to various depths and create micro-worlds to which the house is centred and becomes thus independent of the surroundings. Form the other end the mass is perforated by traffic cores. Individual layouts then allow more flexible division and diversification according to the need for lighting, insolation, acoustics and operation.
The compact form is lightened by the hint of inner atriums behind the light surface cladding.
